Floating Box House
Todos Santos, BCS, Mexico

"Keep the sun out, keep the cost down, use local materials (cinder blocks fabricated a mile away) and give us a view of La Pastora,” was the program brief from the clients for this house in south Baja. After camping out and studying the site with the owner for 5 days, the design was worked out stateside.

A six foot deep roof cantilever, insulated roof, and very large windows (window sash are actually full size doors) oriented to the prevailing westerly breeze characterize the phase one (anchored box) construction and serve the passive cooling requirements. The famed surf break is visible from the roof deck, and the “floating” part of the project (as yet unbuilt) is oriented on the same view corridor.

Phase 1 completed Winter 2004.
