Craftsman’s Rebirth
Berkeley, California

Working closely with builder owner Chip Harley, this second story addition was designed to blend seamlessly with the classic Berkeley brown-shingle bungalow character of the existing house. The size of the lot and local zoning codes made going up with the addition the only really viable option. A low spring height for the new roof and semi-vaulted ceilings inside kept the profile of the addition low for concerned neighbors, while maintaining a spacious feeling inside for the clients.

Salvaged Douglas Fir sheathing was used as wainscoting in the stairwell to match existing period wainscoting in the existing house. Builder Harley deftly matched other period details inside and outside while fully modernizing this turn-of-the-century gem.

Completed Summer 2005.
